CHILDREN'S CLASS CURRICULUM
Our non-competitive traditional approach to teaching promotes personal development rather than focusing on sport or competition. The children's class is conducted in a positive manner and discipline is achieved through positive reinforcement. Our belief is that learning should be fun!
Your child will receive a birthday gift on his/her birthday. Mrs. West has set up a positive reinforcement star system to encourage the children. After receiving 10 stars, the student may choose a prize from the "goody basket." To encourage patience, the student may elect to save the stars until 20 stars are accumulated and a larger prize may be chosen from the box.
There are several ways in which the student may earn extra stars. To recognize academic excellence, Mrs. West has West's Honor Club and The Rising Star Club. West's Honor Club members are students who receive all As and Bs or all Es and Ss on their report cards. The Rising Star Club members are students who improve in at least one area for the report card period. This improvement can be in behavior, spelling, handwriting, etc., and any improvement qualifies the student for membership in this club. The names of all club members will be displayed in the school and all members will receive a star for each report card period. A written note to Mrs. West from home is required for membership in the clubs.
Another way for students to earn extra stars is by doing a kind act for someone. The only catch is that the children must perform the act without being told. For example: brushing teeth without being told, cleaning room, taking out the trash, etc. Occasionally, Mrs. West will ask the children if they have done a kind act for someone and the students who have done something thoughtful will receive a star. Hopefully, the students will make performing thoughtful acts part of their everyday life. We have heard positive comments from many thankful parents for the encouragement of this trait.
